The Birkenkopf!

I had my first experience with the autobahn today!!!! Thanks to Mike I was able to experience about 120 mph on the unrestricted portion of the autobahn...the weird part about it was that there were cars that were zooming by us! I also had a visitors pass made for me so I can access the base here.

The Birkenkopf is a memorial for WWII that uses the ruble from the destroyed buildings of WWII and makes them into a monument stacked atop a hill. The ruble forms random piles that can climbed and used for seating, there is also a large cross with an amphitheater. At the top of the hill you can see great panoramic views of Stuttgart and the surrounding German cities...you can even see the Alps (although today it was too fogy).

We also visited a nearby castle (Castle Solitude)...it was very reminiscent of Sanssouci! The rest of the day was very leisurely and relaxing...great to get a sense of home away from home for a while!

Tomorrow we head to Trier to see the holy tunic!!!!!
