Trier und Benz

Friday:

We got up pretty early and took a three and half hour drive to Trier yesterday...along the way we passed through some very picturesque German countryside. We also made a gradual altitude climb...my ears started to pop halfway through the trip!

The city of Trier contains a lot of Roman culture and history...it was once a Roman colony. Trier has one of the best preserved Roman gates in the whole world...the "Porta Nigra" or Black Gate. The "Christ's Robe" drew quite the attention with travelers from around the globe yesterday. Before we could see it on display there was a service in the cathedral so we spent a large part of the afternoon walking around the city center in Trier waiting on the cathedral to be opened. There is no definite proof that the robe I saw yesterday is in fact the robe that Jesus used to wear before he was crucified, but it is the same robe that has been in possession of the Trier Cathedral for over 2000 years. Even though no one knows 100 percent if the robe is the "robe" it was still eerie seeing it yesterday!

Afterwards we had a delicious dinner at a restaurant outside of Trier called "Silz". This place was nestled in the beautiful hills and made their beer in house. It was a long day yesterday, we did not get back to Stuttgart until right before 12am...hence no blog!

Saturday:

Today was pretty laid back but I did make it to the Mercedes museum. The outside of the building boasted some pretty impressive architecture in my opinion but the inside....not so much. I liked the inside but the design program (how you navigate the museum) was awful. I could never tell if I was going the right way or if I was seeing everything in the museum. As I figured Mercedes-Benz has some very nice cars both past and present. The one thing that was a bit surprising was reading all of the descriptions and listening to all of the "audio guides" in the museum. I discovered that the "people" of Mercedes-Benz are not modest...in fact they came off as very arrogant, haha. All in all the museum was very nice I learned the history of the name "Mercedes-Benz" and also was en-lighted on how little car technology has really changed in the last 50 years.

I also got a quick look at the Porsche Museum...the outside of it looked pretty neat too.

More to come tomorrow!

Annnnnnd Since I am 6 hours ahead of everyone on the east coast...it is officially my mother's birthday so in all of the different languages I have experienced so far:

Feliz Cumpleanos! (Spanish)
Felic Aniversari! (Catalan)
Alles Gute zum Geburtstag! (German)
Buon Compleanno! (Italian)
and of course Happy Birthday! (and y'all know this one)

The Black Gate
 Inside the Black Gate
The Trier Cathedral from the Black Gate
 Old Roman Coliseum in Trier

 The Mercedes Benz Museum

Uncle Steve this one reminded me of yours.....

Minority Report anyone? The center of the museum has an open gallery that goes "cuts" through all of the floors of the museum and at the top there is this "Tri" shaped thing just like from Minority Report!

I normally don't want Mercedes but this one made me change my mind!

 Concept Car obviously!
Even the elevators going up the side of the gallery scream Minority Report!
