Yesterday we had a small celebration at Miguel Rodan's (head of the BAC) House and Office. His flat was very large and even more grand than Kathrin and Thomas's flat. It was a nice break from work which was what I did more of the rest of the day...hence no blog from yesterday.
Went to Palm Sunday Mass this morning, the Spanish do Palm Sunday a bit differently than what I am accustomed to back home. For starters the "palms" are much more extravagant than the ones we use at home, they also have to buy them...yes I said buy! If you want your palm to be blessed on Sunday then you have to either make them or buy them on Saturday and then bring them with you at mass to be blessed. There is also another custom of bringing a "bouquet" of fresh branches instead of palms and having them be blessed (I am not sure what kind of tree they come from, but I will assume an olive tree????)
The service was very beautiful and once again inspiring...the smell of the incense, the candles and the crisp air of the high ceiling added a very unique ambiance to my Palm Sunday experience. I was also able to pick up a little bit more on what the priest was saying...I'm getting better at understanding! But all of that still did not compare to the experience I had mid-way through the service.
As I stated earlier everyone either had palms or these branches with them during the service, I was looking around at everyone else's "bouquets" and I caught eyes with an elderly woman who was sitting directly behind me. She smiled, so I smiled back and greeted her with "Buenas Dias", I turned back around and continued listening to the service. A few seconds later she tapped me on the shoulder and handed me a piece of her "bouquet", naturally I said thank you and tried to explain that she did not have to give me some of her "bouquet" but she happily insisted so I gratefully accepted it. This all happened moments before "La Paz" or the Peace, once the time came to "give the peace of the lord" I turned around to hug her and she was gone!! I spent the rest of the day trying to rationalize what happened, perhaps in the few minutes before the peace she silently "slipped" out of the cathedral...but I couldn't bring myself to believe this, she was sitting right behind me, I would have heard her. So I took that little moment as a visit from an angel, I literally "received the peace of the lord" what a great way to start my last week of classes...
I also accomplished some more studio work. Tomorrow is the last review we will get from Jordi before the final this Thursday so I hope everything goes well. Happy Palm Sunday!
